A Valley Town With Hills on Every Side
Golden sits in a sheltered valley where Clear Creek leaves the mountains, with Lookout Mountain on one side and North and South Table Mountain on the other. As concrete contractors serving Golden, we spend a lot of time on grade: driveways that climb, steps that link a street to a front door well above it, and patios carved into a slope. The city's listed elevation is 5,784 feet, and the 2020 census counted 20,399 people in about 8,500 homes.
Two street patterns, two kinds of job
Golden's original grid runs roughly northwest to southeast along Clear Creek, with 66-foot rights of way downtown and an 80-foot right of way on Washington Avenue. After World War II the city grew fast. In 1959 it nearly tripled in size by annexing land to the south, and new subdivisions went in with their own curving street systems.
That split shapes the work. On the older grid, lots are more regular, but houses can be close to the walk and steps are often short and steep. In the curving subdivisions, driveways tend to be longer and some climb or drop sharply from the street. A steep drive needs a broom finish with real texture for winter traction, a thicker section where tires turn, and joints placed so water runs down the drive, not across the garage threshold.
Building on a slope
When a site falls away, the base matters more than the concrete itself. We cut to firm soil, add and compact road base in lifts, and use rebar where the slab spans a transition or carries vehicles. For steps, we pour on a solid footing and tie the treads to the landing so the set does not drift away from the house over time. If a patio needs a short retaining edge to sit level, we explain that in the estimate rather than surprising you mid-job.
A brick and clay town
In the 1800s Golden was a trade and industry center with brick works, clay and coal mines, and a brewery. The Coors brewery opened in 1873 and still operates in the valley, and CoorsTek grew from the same company's porcelain and ceramics work. You see that brick heritage in older homes near downtown. When we pour new walks or steps beside a brick house, we think about color. A plain gray slab can look harsh next to old red brick, so many owners choose a tinted mix or a stamped border.
Services we offer in Golden
- Concrete driveways on flat lots and steep ones, with traction finishes where needed
- Concrete patios cut into hillside yards, pitched away from the foundation
- Stamped concrete for walks and patios that sit beside brick or stone
- Sidewalks and steps, including long step runs from the street to the door
- Garage and shed slabs for detached garages and storage buildings
- Concrete repair and replacement for settled steps, cracked drives and scaled walks
Near the School of Mines
Colorado School of Mines sits a few blocks south of downtown, on a hill above the city. Streets around campus mix owner-occupied homes and rentals, and both usually need durable, low-maintenance surfaces. For rentals we often recommend a plain broom finish with a penetrating sealer, which holds up to heavy foot traffic and is simple to maintain.
Planning your project
Tell us what you want to fix or build, and we will walk the site with you. On sloped lots we bring a level and take spot elevations so the quote reflects real fill, forming and step counts. If the work touches the public right-of-way, we check with the City of Golden about what is required before scheduling.
Golden Ground Conditions
- Valley setting. Golden lies in a valley fed by Clear Creek between Lookout Mountain and the two Table Mountains.
- 1959 annexation. The city nearly tripled in area in 1959 by annexing land to the south, followed by new subdivisions.
- Street layout. Downtown streets have 66-foot rights of way, while outlying subdivisions use their own curving street systems.
- Industrial past. Brick works, clay and coal mines and a brewery made Golden a regional industry center in the 1800s.

Golden Questions
Can you pour a driveway on a steep lot in Golden?
Yes. Steep drives need a well-compacted base, reinforcement, a deep broom finish for traction and joints that keep water moving downhill. We measure the grade during the estimate so the plan fits your lot.
Will new concrete steps match my older brick home?
Plain gray concrete can stand out next to old brick. We can tint the mix or add a stamped or colored border so new steps and walks sit more naturally beside the house.
How long do concrete steps take to build?
A typical set takes a few days to form and pour, then several days of curing before heavy use. Light foot traffic is usually fine within a day or two, and we tell you when it is safe.
