Concrete Work in Our Home City
We are concrete contractors in Lakewood, and this is the city we know first. Lakewood covers about 43 square miles of land on the western edge of the Great Plains, running from the Denver line toward Green Mountain, which tops out at 6,854 feet. The 2020 census counted 155,984 residents. For a typical house here, the driveway, the front walk and the backyard slab are where most of our work happens.
A big city that came late to city services
Lakewood was platted in 1889 as a 13-block strip along Colfax Avenue, but it did not incorporate until June 24, 1969. By then more than 90,000 people already lived here. Before that, the area leaned on water districts, fire districts and Jefferson County, and some neighborhoods went without street lights or sidewalks. That history still shows on the ground. In older blocks you can find a stretch of full sidewalk, then a stretch with none, then a driveway apron poured to a different grade than the walk beside it.
When you ask us to replace a driveway on one of those blocks, we look at more than the slab. We check how the apron meets the street, whether gutter water runs toward the garage, and whether a new walk has to match a neighbor's grade. If the work reaches into the public right-of-way, we check with the City of Lakewood about which permit applies before we set a pour date.
Winters that test every slab
The climate table for Lakewood lists an average of 58 inches of snow a year, mean January lows of 21.1°F and a record low of −26°F. Snow here often melts in the afternoon sun and refreezes overnight. That cycle is what breaks down concrete poured without enough entrained air or finished with extra water on the surface.
For outdoor flatwork we use an air-entrained mix, cut control joints at a spacing that suits the slab thickness, and cure the surface instead of letting it dry fast in the wind. We also talk about deicers. Rock salt and some chemical melts speed up scaling on young concrete, so for the first winter we suggest sand for traction on a new driveway or walk.
Gulches, creeks and drainage
A long list of streams runs east through the city toward the South Platte: Lakewood Gulch, Weir Gulch, Sanderson Gulch, Dry Gulch, McIntyre Gulch, Lena Gulch, Turkey Creek and Bear Creek. Homes near these drainages often sit on lots that fall toward them. On those properties a patio or driveway has to shed water away from the foundation. We set forms with a steady fall, add a drain or swale where the grade calls for one, and avoid trapping water between a new slab and the house.
What we pour in Lakewood
- Concrete driveways: full tear-outs, new pours, wider parking pads and new aprons that meet the curb cleanly
- Concrete patios: backyard slabs sized for a table and grill, pitched to carry meltwater off
- Stamped concrete: patterned patios and walks for the look of stone without loose pavers
- Sidewalks and steps: front walks, stoops and step sets doweled into the slab below
- Garage and shed slabs: pads for detached garages, sheds and shops on a compacted base
- Concrete repair and replacement: heaved, sunken or scaled sections replaced panel by panel when that makes sense
Belmar, the Federal Center and the morning commute
Belmar, the town center, stands where the Villa Italia Mall once sat on West Alameda Avenue. The Denver Federal Center, with about 8,000 employees, is the largest employer, and the W Line light rail has run through Lakewood since 2013 with seven stations in the city. Plenty of households here leave early for work, so we plan driveway pours around where you will park. A new driveway needs about a week before a car goes on it, and we give you that date before we start.
How an estimate works
We come out, measure, look at the existing concrete and the grade, and ask how you use the space. Then you get a written scope that spells out removal, base work, thickness, reinforcement, finish and cleanup. If a smaller repair will do the job, we say so.

Lakewood Questions
Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Lakewood?
It depends on the scope. Work that touches the curb, gutter or public sidewalk usually involves the city, while a backyard patio may not. We check the City of Lakewood's current rules for your address before we schedule, and we handle the paperwork when a permit applies.
Why do some Lakewood streets have no sidewalks?
Much of Lakewood was built before the city incorporated in 1969, when the area relied on special districts and the county for services, and some streets never got sidewalks. If you want a new front walk, we tie it into your driveway and steps and slope it so it drains.
How soon can I drive on a new driveway?
Walking on it is usually fine after a day or two. We ask you to keep cars off for about a week, longer in cold weather, because concrete keeps gaining strength as it cures.
